Nice Segway...

Well, let me see... spent the last 2 days exploring San Francisco - and there is too much to explore in the short time I am here, so I've had to do my best. Went to Alcatraz yesterday and did a tour of the cell blocks. For those fans of "So I Married An Axe Murderer", it was not as interesting as the tour Phil Hartman does in the movie, with no mention of "ocular cavities" and there is no cafeteria either! Actually, there was no tour guide at all, just a headset with an mp3 player, but still interesting. Other highlights of San Francisco have been Little Italy, Pacific Heights, Russian Hill, Little Saigon and of course, Nob Hill!

Today went over the Golden Gate Bridge, at least I think I did. The fog was pretty bad (as it often is), but cleared a little when we got to the lookout. In the afternoon, I went on a Segway tour of the waterfront, after about 40 minutes of training (which was fun in itself!). Anyone who has seen Arrested Development (and if you have any taste you would have) with G.O.B. riding one will know why I did it - lots of fun and very easy to ride once you get the hang of it.

The weather has been superb every day and it has taken me by surprise, which is probably why I am now so sunburnt! Anyway, off to Seattle / Olympia tomorrow to spend 2 1/2 weeks with Brother and family - looking forward to spending the time with them (if the kids let Uncle Johnny get his sleep-in time!).

Are You Being Served?

I Left My Harp In Sam Crab's Disco

After about 15 hours of flying (considering that from St. Kilda to Kings Cross it's 13 hours on a bus!) I arrived in San Francisco. In an effort to stay awake until it was really bedtime, I walked all the way from my hotel to Fisherman's Wharf - hard work considering those hills (San Fran is kind of like Melbourne, just much hillier - and warmer - and... actually, they are not alike at all)! I even walked up Lombard Street (not the crocked bit, but next to it!). They really need to just straighten that road out - bloody silly really!

Lisa Mac, I thought you were joking about "Coit Tower", I thought you were just referring to the Castro! Actually, I did learn that Coit Tower is named after Lillie Hitchcock Coit, who bequeathed funds for the beautification of the city upon her death in 1929. Whatever, I might go up the Coit tomorrow if I have time (either that, or Nob Hill).

After a day exploring the wharf areas, I took the easier way home, taking a cable car ride back to near the hotel. For some reason, it was free to ride the cable cars today, so there was a huge queue (or line, as they incorrectly say here), but worth the wait to avoid those bloody hills!

A Good Start!

Well, I have been relieved to learn my flight to San Francisco goes via Sydney and not Los Angeles, as I originally thought... that should make things easier!
